Airbnb Could Be Hit by Proposed Additional Restrictions on Short-Term Rentals in Florence, Italy

10:00 AM EDT, 05/27/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Airbnb (ABNB) could take a hit from a city government proposal to expand the areas covered by restrictions on new short-term tourist rentals in Florence, Italy, multiple reports said Wednesday.

Florence City Councilor Dmitrij Palagi said the "Funaro Council" approved the additional regulations on May 26 and the measure is expected to be presented to the city council on June 4 for review. "If everything goes well, it will be in force in about three weeks," Palagi said.

He said the new restrictions were proposed following an "exponential increase" in requests and increase in authorizations. In the first five months of 2026, 270 authorizations have already been issued for short-term rentals, up from 132 in seven months of 2025, Palagi said.

The new restrictions prevent new short-term tourist rentals across about 6 square miles of the city for two years, bringing the total number of homes covered by the ban to more than 103,000, from 35,593 at present, according to Reuters.

Airbnb didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
